Michael Hanrahan – Principal / Director

Michael is the founding Principal of our Sydney based Chartered Accounting practice.  The practice was established in 1993 as Hanrahan & Associates but originated from another Chartered Accounting practice where Michael had been a partner for 10 years.  Michael is also the founding principal of the Financial Planning division which received its own Australian Financial Services (AFS) Licence in 2011.

Michael is a director of Hanrahans Accounting Services Pty Ltd and Hanrahans Financial Planning Pty Ltd.  He is a Registered Tax Agent, a Registered Company Auditor and a Justice of the Peace.

Michael was educated at Sydney University where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Economics.  In 1978 he commenced employment with a large accounting firm Coopers and Lybrand (now part of PWC) and worked in various positions there for five years.  He subsequently joined a small business specialist accounting practice as a partner for 10 years.  He went on to establish his own practice when he and his former partner decided to pursue further growth individually.

In his professional career as a practising Chartered Accountant over 30 years, Michael has had extensive experience in preparing accounts and various tax returns for companies, partnerships, trusts, superannuation funds, sole traders and high net worth individuals. He has advised clients in relation to federal and state taxes, financial reporting and management, restructuring strategies, financial planning and financing issues, and various other financial matters.

Michael also has extensive experience in business advisory and litigation support assignments, and has acted as an expert witness in courts in respect of these matters.

During his long journey of founding and growing an accounting practice, Michael has led his team by example and has forged a culture of delivering professional services with personal attention. 

Michael has actively supported charitable causes and the community.   He has raised significant funds for various charities and has acted pro-bono for a number of not for profit organisations.  He is currently a committee member of Tattersalls Club and serves as its treasurer.

Michael became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) in 1982 and was elected a Fellow in 1993. He was formerly a spokesperson for small business for the ICAA and Chairman of its Small Business Committee. 

As head of the Financial Planning division Michael provides professional financial planning advice which is independent of the major banks and insurance companies.  He is a fully qualified member of the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA).

Michael maintains a healthy balance of work, family and exercise. In his free time he participates in various endurance based sporting activities.  He is also a keen follower and spectator of most sports, in particular AFL, NRL, Rugby Union, Cricket and Cycling.
