Charlie Rao

Charlie Rao – Associate Director

Charlie has been with hanrahans since 2000 and is currently an Associate Director.  He has the responsibility to assist the Director on practice planning and management matters.  In addition, he provides high level technical advice and training to all staff, as well as manages complex issues for clients.

Charlie has excellent academic records and achievements. Originally trained as an engineer, Charlie has higher degrees including a PhD from the Australian National University and is the proud recipient of a prestige ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship. In his former profession Charlie was involved in various research projects and university teaching.  These experiences provided him with strong project management ability and presentation skills.   

During his work for a commercialisation project in late 90’s Charlie discovered his passion in finance and business services.  He then successfully completed postgraduate studies in Professional Accounting at Macquarie University with top grades in all subjects.  

Upon graduation from the postgraduate accounting course, Charlie joined hanrahans and soon completed his Chartered Accountant Program with a merit award.  He has also successfully completed the Public Practice Program which is a requirement for being a principal/partner at a professional Chartered Accounting firm.

As a Chartered Accountant with many years’ experiences in public accounting practice, Charlie has extensive expertise in almost all facets of accounting, taxation and business advisory services.  He has advanced knowledge in diverse areas such as: general accounting and compliance, financial and compliance audit or review, tax planning and advice, business valuation, economic loss assessment, business and investment structures, business planning and financing, business buy and sell, merger and restructuring, estate planning and succession planning. 

Charlie has played a key role in many dispute resolution or litigation assignments, managing various tax audits and winning a number of objections and appeals. Because he is passionate about revenue and administrative laws, Charlie has also made considerable contributions in tax law administration, including submissions to professional bodies and the tax office on various precedent views and draft tax legislations.

Charlie is a full member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (now a part of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand), was elected a Fellow of the Tax Institute and now holds the status of a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA). 

Charlie is the proud father of two boys. During leisure time he enjoys reading and listening to music.
